Finding a family dentist is already a big decision. Add the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and it can feel like one more thing to decode. The good news is that a few well-chosen questions will tell you most of what you need to know before you book.
We recently looked at 32 practice websites across four provinces to see how clearly they explained CDCP. Nearly all said they accept it, but far fewer explained the details that affect your wallet. You can read the full breakdown in our original comparison of CDCP dentists. This article turns those findings into a practical checklist for families.
Why "we accept CDCP" is only the first step
Accepting CDCP means a practice will see you under the plan. It does not tell you how billing works, what you will owe, or whether the office will help you sort out the paperwork. A good dental team explains these things before treatment, so there are no surprises at the front desk.
Seven questions to ask before you book
- Do you accept CDCP, and are you taking new patients? Of the 32 practices we sampled, 30 said they accept CDCP, but only 18 clearly welcomed new patients.
- Do you bill Sun Life directly? Only 14 of 32 said so. Direct billing means you usually pay just your portion and skip the claim forms.
- Who qualifies, and where can I confirm it? Eligibility is decided by the Government of Canada, so a good office points you to the right place to check.
- Will CDCP cover the whole bill? It may not. Ask the office to explain what can be left over.
- Will I know my cost before treatment starts? Just 11 of 32 promised this, and it is one of the most reassuring things a practice can offer.
- How do CDCP and private insurance work together? You usually can't have both, so ask how the office sees your situation.
- What are your hours? Evenings and Saturdays can make family visits much easier.
Understanding your portion
Your share of the cost under CDCP depends on family income. As a general guide:
| Family income | Your portion |
|---|---|
| Under $70,000 | 0%, CDCP covers its full fee |
| $70,000 to $79,999 | 40% |
| $80,000 to $89,999 | 60% |
There is one more detail worth knowing. There are two fee guides, so the difference between them is your portion. A practice that explains this clearly, and gives you a figure before work begins, is helping you plan rather than guess.
Making the first visit calmer
If dental visits make you or your children nervous, clarity about cost removes one source of worry. Asking questions first, and hearing patient answers, is a good sign of how a team will treat you in the chair. Look for an office that welcomes your questions, explains each step, and offers practical conveniences such as parking and flexible hours.
If you are comparing offices in South Surrey and White Rock, you can see how one team approaches family care on the main website, or read about family dentistry to learn what regular visits can include.
A quick checklist to take with you
- Confirm your eligibility with the Government of Canada
- Ask about direct billing to Sun Life
- Request your cost before treatment begins
- Ask how CDCP fits with any private coverage
- Check for new-patient availability and convenient hours
A dentist who answers these questions clearly is usually one who will explain your care clearly too. That kind of openness is a solid foundation for a long-term family dental relationship.
